The purpose of this website is to provide technical material aimed at engineers, professionals, and students in the electrical and electromechanical fields, contributing to the correct application of concepts related to electrical systems of hydroelectric power plants. Topics covered include generators, power transformers, step-up transformers, emergency generator sets, substations, and other associated equipment and installations. The documents have been developed based on well-established technical references and allow users to perform technical checks and estimations.
The documents and technical notes are intended to support the sizing and understanding of technical aspects relevant to performance, modernization, and new hydroelectric projects. Although focused on hydroelectric plants, the content may also be applied, when appropriate, to other industrial installations with similar characteristics.
Due to the complexity of the expressions involved in the calculations, the equations were decomposed into intermediate steps within the Excel spreadsheets, avoiding the use of long formulas that are difficult to verify within a single cell. The spreadsheets facilitate the practical application of the presented methods.
The spreadsheets are organized into two sheets:
● Complete: includes all intermediate calculation steps, allowing for verification, validation, and detailed analysis of results.
● Simplified: includes only input data and results, intended for operational purposes. This sheet is structurally identical to the Complete Sheet but with intermediate data hidden.
A key feature of this work is that all formulas used in the calculations are fully detailed in the technical documents, allowing users to apply them in other programs or applications similar or equivalent to Excel. The spreadsheets alone are sufficient to obtain the results.
No registration or data entry is required to access the material. The spreadsheets are not permanently protected against editing. This decision is intentional. Simple protection mechanisms can be easily bypassed by technically skilled users; therefore, access to formulas and calculation structures has not been restricted.
The conceptual and theoretical foundation of the work is described in the technical documents. The spreadsheets are complementary and may be freely analyzed, adapted, or modified by users at their own responsibility. However, their use and modification should be carried out responsibly, as changes may affect the results. Caution is recommended when altering formulas or internal structures, as such modifications may compromise consistency.
The documents presented have been developed based on the author’s experience, classical technical literature, and publications by recognized authors who have significantly contributed to the field over decades. The theoretical foundations in electrical engineering and mathematics are traditional and remain the essential basis for any consistent engineering study. With advances in computing resources, it has become possible to refine calculations and analyses using more precise tools.
Due to the dynamic nature of the publications, technical documents may be updated to improve content, correct technical aspects, or refine wording. Calculation demonstrations and technical documents, unless explicitly stated otherwise, do not undergo conceptual changes that alter their technical basis. Therefore, the use of previous versions does not necessitate revisions to completed work. Updates will be made whenever necessary to improve clarity and technical accuracy.
The development of this work is based on the Brazilian context and, in some cases, on technical standards and recommendations in force at the current time. It is essential to note that subsequent revisions and updates to these standards can cause radical changes in interpretation and application within engineering criteria. Users are strongly advised to always consult the most recent versions of applicable standards and technical documents relevant to the installation location before any practical application.
Additional considerations should be given to the continuous emergence of new equipment and technologies, as well as the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is expected to become a valuable tool in supporting analysis, decision-making, operation, and maintenance of systems.
To broaden access to the material in Spanish and English, translations were performed with the support of artificial intelligence tools. Minor inaccuracies or grammatical adjustments may occur, particularly due to the technical nature of the content originally developed in Portuguese.
